Extract 1 of 4 - Chapter Three

“Shadows!” hissed his mum. “I can smell the hexite. They’re in”. She was rooted to the spot. Just then the glasses on the draining board began to skip along the rack, until they ran out of surface and smashed to the floor. There was a slow scraping sound at the kitchen window. Felix’s mum melted into his arms.

“I knew they were coming,” she whispered. “I could smell them” He sniffed. There was a sulphurous smell of rotten eggs in the air. “It’s nightmare energy from The Fear” her voice quivered. “And it’s in the house!”

A dark shadow passed over the window, blocking out what little light was coming through from outside. He craned up to take a look and leapt back in terror. A huge, dark face, with livid white eyes peered in at him, inky fingers pressed against the windows. It had long hair, like seaweed that seemed to move independently of the rest of its body, its sole purpose being to obscure as much of the creature’s face as possible.
“Shadows” he screamed in horror.

Felix’s mum pulled him close. The whole floor under their feet exploded as if a giant geyser had erupted beneath the house. The reinforced glass at the windows shattered. Felix wanted to curl up into a ball, but he knew that he had to do something to save them. A shadowy shape was coming right through the back door, despite its locks, its bars, its barricade and its sealants. He watched the metal backing to the door soften. The door itself began to singe and smoke. A dark sinuous outline stepped through the thick barrier.
